Taken from another photojournalist Moises Saman of a demonstrator sleeping near a baracade...I've been seeing these blue baracades in a lot of the photos from the protests. This blue is really quite beautiful and it's interesting in the context of what is going on.

On The Waterfront: Terry and Edie's scene

One of my favorite scenes in film. It's been long documented and remarked at the bit where Terry picks up Edie's glove and doesn't hand it back to her...she makes an attempt at getting it back without letting go of her line...Brando's choice is staggering...it makes the connection between the two legitimate...she has to stay and continue the conversation in order to get her glove back...he makes her stay with this action.

Another thing I love is the eye contact and lack of eye contact. At the beginning of the scene when Edie is pressing Terry about Joey, Brando's eyes are looking everywhere, which feels extraordinarily natural. It's the way a lot of us have conversations, with very little eye contact. Eva Marie Saint looks around skittishly looking at him, then away and back...demurely...

The turn in the scene is tremendous as well as Terry gets her to smile...it becomes about memory...what each remembers about the other...gives us a little backstory to them and how they watched each other from afar when they were younger. Nostalgia seems to be a great disarmer. Once she smiles there is a comfort level that was not at the beginning of the scene...Her turn is very apparent, and Terry's less so although he is now a bit more himself. On the swing he was stumbling over questions, trying to seem smarter than maybe he is, and he's aware of that which makes the scene tense at that point. Knowing you're not something you wish you could be, or you thought people would want to see is a difficult piece of self information to wade through...well played by both.

Critics always choose the "contender" scene with steiger as the classic scene of this film but this is it for me...tense, tender, natural, optomistic and tragic.

Oxford Project

I received a very special present for Christmas this year from one of my oldest friends and his lady...the book is entitled the Oxford Project...Photographer Peter Feldstein and writerStephen Bloom went to a small town in Iowa in 1984 and documented ALL 700+ of it's residents at the time...only to return in 2007-08 to rephotograph them as they are now...simple black and white photographs taken with two lights, a tarp and a camera...It is special in a number of ways...1.) it is an amazing study in character design in terms of the history, back story, fears and dreams of a character...look into the eyes of these townspeople...along with the photographs, Bloom captures brief stories given by the subjects of the photographs...they are heartwarming, simple, sincere, charming and beautiful glimpses into their thoughts and feelings of themselves and life around them...below are just a few of the photos before and after (1984 and 2008) 2.) it completely supports the one thing that is consistently inspiring me creatively and is the impetus for ADAM...when you look at some of these photos you see that some folks haven't changed much at all...my favorite of the below images is TED as his costume remains consistent although he's aged a bit...JOANN physically has changed a lot and KEVIN to a good degree as well but his costume is consistent...familiarity I'm guessing...I love watching people and what they wear and try to figure out how their fashion has evolved...how they perceive themselves in those clothes...was the choice to put "this" on instead of "that" motivated by appearance, the fact that they still hadn't done laundry, or comfort...this is a big part of character design for me...that psychology of what a character wears as a signifier to who they are...I wear a lot of flannel shirts, don't shave, and have perpetually blood-shot eyes...when people characature me that's what goes into it and is nearly ALWAYs recognizable...3.) it is just an inspiring narrative of small town America...simple straight on compositions of people...black and white...and yet those simple images say so much...enjoy these...Thanks Ben and Maja!

In June, Jada and I inherited her old roommates fawn doberman pinscher. His name is Juno...part of his mutation is that he will eventually be completely bald...as a result he shivers a lot...he got a new Christmas sweater and he loves wearing it...it's a very ivy league/preppy/I'm-gunna-hang-out-at-the-ski-lodge-and-get-me-a-lady look.
